Parsons Behle & Latimer (Parsons) is pleased to announce that litigation attorney Abigail Dizon-Maughan has joined the firm’s litigation team. Dizon-Maughan is well known for her community activism and is currently the chairperson for the Professional Standards Review Board of the West Valley Police Department and the chairperson of the Salt Lake branch of the Criminal Justice Committee of the NAACP.

Dizon-Maughan brings to the firm significant trial and courtroom experience. She has been recognized by her peers as an up-and-coming litigator and has been recognized by the Utah State Bar for her mentorship of young attorneys. After graduation, Dizon-Maughan established her own law firm, defending the rights of individuals accused of serious crimes. After five years, she joined a boutique firm where she transitioned from criminal defense to complex commercial litigation and plaintiff medical malpractice. Dizon-Maughan says she realizes the legal process can be intimidating for plaintiffs. She enjoys being the stoic statue advocate for clients – an attorney with an empathetic ear, but an unemotional approach to the law.

Parsons’ litigation, securities & tax practice area chairperson Juli Blanch says, “I knew Abby first by reputation, as she is known to be a skilled lawyer and bar leader. Then, I was able to meet her through Bar events and became even more impressed. We welcome Abby to Parsons and are confident she will continue to flourish here in her legal career.”

Dizon-Maughan says her interest in community advocacy grew from the lack of representation and voice for diverse groups. She says, “I wanted to create better representation and have a place at the table to generate change. I used my legal education and training to help catapult me into that role. I wanted teens to see a mom who doesn’t look like the average mom (Dizon-Maughan is of Filipino-Chinese descent) doing something to represent people in the community.”

According to Dizon-Maughan, this sense of community and giving back is a characteristic she has witnessed in Parsons’ attorneys and the firm and was a draw in coming to the firm. “I consider Parsons an anchor in the community,” she says. “The firm brings up the quality of the legal profession and its attorneys. They are good people committed to what they do and where they live, which is very important to me.”
