On May 9, Parsons Behle & Latimer employment and labor attorneys joined Bridgerland SHRM for its 2024 Annual Conference “Shaping the Future: Trends & Insights for Tomorrow” in Logan, Utah. 

Parsons’ employment attorney Paul Smith (pictured), who is a member of the board of directors of Bridgerland SHRM, assisted in organizing the conference as well as presented, along with many of his peers.

 The presentation included the following topics and presenters:

Michael Judd – Analysis of recent decisions from the United States Supreme Court, including a new standard for adverse employment actions and religious accommodations

Sean A. Monson – The Department of Labor’s rule regarding independent contractors and the Federal Trade Commission’s rule on non-competes

Michael Patrick O’ Brien – Updates to equal employment opportunity laws and regulations, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s new guidance on harassment and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act

Paul R. Smith – Issues related to remote work, including time keeping and leave issues

Mark D. Tolman – Update from the Utah State Legislature’s most recent session, including bills on employee confidentiality provisions, workplace discrimination amendments and unemployment insurance amendments

Elena T. Vetter – Updates from the National Labor Relations Board, including a discussion of the NLRB’s Stericycle decision and the agency’s guidance related to non-competes and joint-employer status
