Matt specializes in trust, probate, elder law and business succession planning. He began his legal practice as a partner in the law firm of Holmgren & Mitton, then was a shareholder with the law firm Jones Waldo. Matt joined Parsons Behle & Latimer in 2022.

Biography

Mr. Mitton assists clients with their basic estate planning (trusts, powers of attorney, medical directives) and advanced estate planning. Basic or “foundation” estate planning is critical to ensure a client’s objectives and wishes are honored and their estate plan is settled without probate costs and entanglements, time delays and family disharmony.

Advanced estate planning encompasses planning focused on a client’s asset protection needs, inheritance tax mitigation and charitable planning. Planning in this arena includes irrevocable trusts, LLC planning, gifting and other asset protection strategies.

Mr. Mitton also assists clients with the settlement or trusts and estates. This important work encompasses the liquidation and transfer of assets, tax planning and other settlement strategies as trust plans are dissolved or administered to provide ongoing asset protection and tax mitigation for beneficiaries. Mr. Mitton will assist clients with the preparation of Form 706, tax basis planning and portability elections. He also assists clients with guardianship and conservatorship matters to obtain court authority to manage the health care and financial affairs of loved ones.

Mr. Mitton has served on many non-profit boards and planned giving committees. He assists clients with donor advised funds, private foundations and strategies designed to enhance a client’s philanthropic objectives and reduce inheritance tax liabilities. He has presented hundreds of estate planning workshops and seminars on topics ranging from asset protection, modern family planning, irrevocable trusts and gifting, charitable planning and the basics of a good estate plan. Organizations like Merrill Lynch, UBS, Wells Fargo, Farm Bureau, Brigham Young University, Snow College, University of Utah, Intermountain Health Care and many others have asked Mr. Mitton to speak to donors, employees, advisors and others as an expert in the estate planning community.
