Biography

Scott Burns partners with clients in construction and real estate transactions, including acquisitions, dispositions, leasing and project development. A former business leader in the retail, restaurant and healthcare industries, Scott delivers business-minded counsel to companies pursuing new real estate opportunities or looking to right-size their footprint. He advises institutions, REITs, investors and developers in transactions involving both individual real property assets and broader real estate portfolios and assists clients with their nationwide real estate needs. Scott also has significant experience serving as a real estate specialist in corporate mergers and acquisitions. Scott began his career as a litigator and continues to provide strategic guidance and manage litigation for his clients in commercial and real property disputes.

Scott previously served as president and CEO of Sagamore Medical Recovery Services, LLC (Sagamore), an Indiana-based medical services provider with a core mission of helping patients recovering from opioid addiction. Sagamore partnered with a large Indiana community mental health center, a pioneering for-profit and non-profit arrangement recognized within the industry and described by the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction as “cutting edge.” In his role, he oversaw medical and most clinical operations for the organization, which treated approximately 375 patients a day, 365 days a year.

In two in-house positions, Scott gained significant experience helping companies with large real estate footprints complete myriad transactions and manage their property assets.

In more than two years as senior counsel for a large franchisee and restauranteur with 200-plus restaurant locations across seven states, Scott was responsible for site leasing, acquisition, development/redevelopment and operational matters. He also provided zoning and development counsel; negotiated easement agreements and general contractor and construction agreements; and worked closely with engineers, construction managers, property management professionals and others at all stages of project development.

Scott also spent more than two years as retail development counsel for an Idaho-based retail grocery operation with more than 100 stores. In this role, he served as lead attorney on all real estate and construction-related transactions, including buying, selling, leasing, development and operational matters.

Scott has represented public and private clients across the country on a range of issues with a particular focus on transactional real estate and corporate matters, business litigation and employment issues. Scott also previously served as a corporate and litigation attorney at a business and entertainment litigation boutique firm in Beverly Hills, California.

Scott enjoys spending time with his wife, two daughters and two step-sons, skiing, fishing and otherwise enjoying the great outdoors.
