Biography

Payton’s comprehensive legal practice includes expertise in business, commercial, real estate, and civil litigation and assisting clients protect and manage water rights and navigate the legal and administrative processes of water.

Payton’s varied experience has provided him with a unique and valuable perspective in addressing complex commercial and business contracts, real estate contracts and titles, and dispute resolution. Payton is recognized as an effective advocate who has a deep understanding of the process and economics of litigation. This expertise allows him to provide his clients with both strategic guidance and confidence in addressing their legal needs and objectives.

Since joining Parsons’ team Payton has also worked closely with clients to assist them with water right permitting, maintenance, transfers and contracting. Payton also has assisted clients with navigating the water right adjudication processes in the State of Idaho. Payton has experience at every level of the water appropriations process and protecting clients’ water rights in litigation and administrative proceedings, including related land use, easement, and encroachment issues. Growing up with an agricultural background gives Payton the perspective needed to understand clients’ water issues from a real-world perspective.

Payton graduated with high honors from the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah. In his previous career, Payton was a wildland firefighter on the Logan Interagency Hotshot Crew, where he qualified as a squad boss and served in roles as a sawyer and EMT while fighting fires throughout the Western states, Alaska, and Canada. Payton loves to spend time outdoors, and when he is not working to serve clients, you will probably find him fly fishing on one of Idaho’s storied trout rivers, skiing, or spending time with his wife and three kids. He is proficient in written and spoken Finnish.
